Southport Flute Lessons

How the lesson works

My flute lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to more advanced players, with tuition tailored to each student’s age, experience and musical goals. If you are looking for a patient flute tutor for a child, or supportive music lessons as an adult, lessons focus on building strong technique, breath control, tone and musical confidence. Students can work through the ABRSM board curriculum or learn simply for enjoyment and personal development.

Lessons are engaging and confidence-building, developing good habits from the start. All pupils will benefit from my flexible and encouraging approach, even if they are returning to music after a break or starting later in life. From playing flute for beginners to preparing for graded exams, lessons are clear, structured and enjoyable.

Your first shorter flute lesson is free, giving you the opportunity to see whether the teaching style is the right fit. We can discuss what you would like to get out of your tutoring and how best I can accommodate those wishes.

For flute beginners, if you already have a flute, in the free lesson I can show you how to hold the flute, we can try to produce our first sounds or fingering for the notes and I can play to you to see if you like the instrument. If you have not yet committed to buying a flute, I can let you hold my instrument and see where your fingers should go. We can talk about the notes and the similarities and differences to a recorder. Though you won’t be able to blow in it, you can still get a feel for what it is like to be a flautist. I can also play to you and show you what the flute can do.

For those who have already some ability, the free session will be about assessing your level and working out which pieces we can start to learn.

If you want to pay for a full half hour lesson, we can start right away with a program and organise lesson times and music books.

It’s up to you.
