Southport Piano Lessons
How the lessons work
I believe most pupils learn best when lessons are enjoyable, motivating and achievable.
My piano lessons are tailored for the individual rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. I take into consideration different learning styles, different paces of learning and different personalities.
Some pupils are complete beginners, some will come to me as already confident players, or some will be returning after a break from learning. Sometimes I will be working with students who wish to follow the international exam board ABRSM, or sometimes with those who want to learn purely for enjoyment. But all lessons focus on strong foundations in technique, rhythm, sight-reading and musical understanding. And all lessons aim to build confidence and musicality in a calm, encouraging environment.
Your first shorter lesson is free, giving you the chance to see whether my teaching style is the right fit. We can discuss what you would like to get out of your tutoring and how best I can accommodate those wishes.
For absolute beginners on the piano, I use the Jibbidy F and ACE music book and in the first free lesson I can work through the first pieces with you and introduce some of the concepts you will be learning.
For those who have already some ability in the instrument, the free session will be about assessing your level and working out which pieces we can start to learn.
If you want to pay for a full half hour lesson, we can start right away with a program and organise lesson times and music books.
It’s up to you.
Various levels to meet your need
Beginner Piano Lessons
Perfect for those new to music or starting an instrument from scratch (Children or adults). These lessons focus on posture, basic technique and beginning to find notes on your instrument and understand how to decode music notation. You will start to learn how to play simple tunes and adapt your body to manipulating your instrument to get nice sounds.
Elementary Level
Students will build fluency with both hands, develop rhythm and coordination, and begin exploring a wider range of styles and more theory understanding. This level often aligns with early ABRSM and suits children or adults gaining confidence beyond the basics.
Intermediate Piano Lessons
For students working towards or within graded exams, lessons focus on musical expression, technique, scales, and exam preparation. This is a great stage for those wanting structured piano training or progressing steadily through the ABRSM piano grades.
Advanced & Returner Level
Ideal for experienced players or adults returning to the piano after time away. Lessons are shaped around personal goals, advanced repertoire, and refining technique - whether you’re preparing for higher grades or simply want to enjoy playing again.
